Comics and Graphic Novels Pal Around With Librarians

In 1954 the U. S. Senate along with Dr. Fredrich Wertham almost destroyed the comic book business. over time social approval for this kids entertainment medium, was blamed for various social conditions including juvenile delinquency. Wertham placed many of societies ills post World War II squarely at the feet of comic publishers and distributors. they focused on the growing popularity of crime and horror comics as their examples of the seduction of the innocent. now, many decades later, graphic novels and comics have become favorites of teachers, instructors and librarians.

Comics as acceptable literature
Much less a very long time ago, kids caught hiding comics between your pages better quality yet less interesting reading through material were likely shipped towards the dean’s office. However comics, including classics for instance Superman and Batman but additionally their generally more refined, nuanced cousins graphic books, are not only seen regarded as educational tools by savvy teachers, they are also given serious attention as literature too by experts and popular entertainment commentators.

Comics might be a powerful way to pique reluctant readers’ interest and challenge individual students that are less than interested in moving to traditional literature. many teens collect comics and therefore are dedicated to the heroic figures from the favorite comics. Fanatics frequently spend some time in comic stores, browsing and browsing anticipation for your latest delivery of comics. some comics fans are enthusiasts of merchandizing comic and have them maintained in mint quality condition. Regrettably, the marketplace for collectors’ products is a guessing game.

Graphic books save the planet again
Many comics address subjects which are vital to a lot of pre-teens and teens, including issues of acceptance, nonconformity, prejudice, social injustice, transitional phase, overcome adversity, and private growth. the super-hero as modern mythology figures for instance Superman, Batman, and Spiderman represent identifiable cultural symbols and possibly, effective archetypes.

The graphic novel grew to become an economic blessing for the comic market generally and films too. Comics and graphic books now end up competing against their movie and tv alternatives.

Adapting comics with other media isn’t new comic adaptations to movies and radio were commonplace within the 30s and 40s. Most of the story lines and mythology around the most popular heroes really made an appearance first on radio and were later standard upon within the funny pages. Throughout the 50s the witch search by Congress and Dr. Wertham, triggered Hollywood, TV and radio to prevent any new adaptations due to the stigma which was starting to attach itself towards the color comics. the 70s and 80s saw a general change in attitude and acceptance of comics like a fun and important medium for children of any age.

Comics and graphic books address social issues
Because the seventies, comics happen to be the main thing on the trends of their day. the 4 printing in color press has carried out subjects for example drug abuse, spousal abuse, alcoholism, insufficient family and companionship, sexual orientation, plus much more. Lots of questionable subjects happen to be elevated and addressed in comics through the years. on many occasions a tale in regards to the specific addiction is offered an optimistic ending and often rather than a victory the storyline finishes in loss. Either in situation comics assistance to demonstrate that even people with amazing capabilities might have problems undertaking probably the most human of functions, or could have them much like everyone else can.

Comics mind to schools and libraries
The comic market is starting to recognize its new found niche in libraries and schools. it appears that libraries have reached having a lasting yearly panel within the greatest comic convention, the North Park Comic Disadvantage.

During the last decade libraries have fallen deeply in love with graphic books. these are typically stand alone tales or compilations of formerly printed books that span a multitude of genre and attracts a significantly larger audience than everyday comics. Graphic books can be viewed as a medium such as the paperback novel or audiobook. They’re as pleasing for the reason that they cover the entire story from beginning to end even when there primary figures are a part of a set.

Even though it is proper etiquette to complete your comic reading through within the library, reading through comics and graphic books in class has become recognized in your general education. I am certain Dr. Fredrich Wertham is most likely allowing this to continue in the grave each time a new movie adaptation from the comic breaks box office records.

When I’m Gone/ Eminem Song Review

I discovered Eminem’s most recent song thanks to a fellow fan from my French Eminem forum. In fact, this is a radio edit of Marshall’s exclusive song.

You all know how much I am into Eminem and I’d like to share my feelings and impressions with my readers straight away.

While listening to the lyrics of the song, sadness overwhelmed my soul and I kept asking myself: what is wrong with you, Marshall Mathers? Is it so hard for you to say good bye to your fans or is there something else you want to tell us all?

The song is gently introduced by light bell sounds and followed by numerous violins which make the listener feel how much the pain is deep and how much Marshall speaks from his heart.

Marshall’s mind is troubled right now and his most recent song made me feel sad and uncomfortable. Yes, he let his emotions out of his chest. Moreover, he made his public feel there was something wrong with him.

For the first time, Eminem has a broken voice on a track which reflects his broken heart. what is happening to Marshall right now? I think I have an answer for my readers.

Marshall feels like it is time the curtain of his public show closed for good. Not that he doesn’t love his fans, but Marshall re-questions his choices and priorities.

Eminem recalls all the good times and the drama that happened in his love life.

As the good family man he is, Marshall is very conscious that he sometimes makes his daughter suffer through his absence. his lack of time and Kim’s whereabouts sometimes make Hailie’s life a real nightmare. when the little girl is looking for her parents, she is unable to find any of them. People who have followed Kim’s story know that she went AWOL, spent some time in rehab and in jail because of her cocaine addiction problems. Hailie was left with no answer during her absence. her loving dad, her emotional support was always on the move, whether he was touring or promoting his album.

The refrain is like tears falling from Eminem’s heart. Marshall is conscious of his daughter’s pain and it literally breaks his heart:

.and when I’m gone, just carry on. don’t mourn.
Rejoice every time you hear the sound of my voice,
Just know that I’m looking down on you smiling,
And I ain’t gon’ feel a thing, so baby don’t feel no pain.
Just smile back.

His fans ought to know that deep inside of him, Marshall lives a real drama. he is heartbroken, inconsolable, helpless.

His daughter, the sunlight in his life, doesn’t want him to go on touring. Eminem’s insecurities and feelings of guiltiness follow him into his dreams and turn into a nightmare:

I keep having this dream, I’m pushing Hailie on the swings
She keeps screaming, she don’t want me to sing.
You’re making mommy cry. why ? why is mommy crying,
Baby, daddy ain’t leaving no more – daddy you’re lying.
You always say that, you always say this is the last time,
But you ain’t leaving no more, Daddy you are mine.
She’s piling boxes in front of the door trying to block it
Daddy please, daddy don’t leave, daddy, no stop it.

Back to reality, the inside drama goes on. Hailie pulls a little picture for her dad out of her pocket. While being on stage, the pain increases with intensity. Marshall can hear the voice of his conscience telling him:

You have got one more chance to do right, and it’s tonight
Now go out there and show that you love them before it’s too late.
And just as I go to walk out my bedroom door
It’s turns to a stage, they’re gone and this spotlight is on
And I’m singing.

On stage, the crowd acclaims Marshall in a very loud scream.

While the fans are throwing roses at his feet, Marshall can hear the voice of his daughter telling him:

Daddy it’s me, help mommy her wrists are bleeding
But baby we’re in Sweden, how did you get to Sweden ?
I followed you daddy, you told me that you weren’t leaving.
You lied to me dad, and now you make mommy sad
And I bought you this coin, it says Number One Dad.

Eminem makes some reference to the drama that happened in 2001. Kim made a suicide attempt, trying to slit her wrists. Maybe the fear of another drama is still present. The past backfires hard into Marshall’s head and pumps loud like heartbeats.

Hailie’s voice is there, once again, in form of reproaches:

- It’s too late dad, you made the choice
Now go up there and show them that you love them more than us.
That’s what they want, they want you Marshall, they keep screaming your name
It’s no wonder you can’t go to sleep. Just take another pill.
Yea, I bet you you will. you rap about it. Yea, Word, Keep it real.

Hailie feels like his dad loves his fans more than his own family. Marshall feels like his mind is split between his love for his family, his passion for the music and the feeling of owing his shows to his fans. he also makes some clear references to his sleep medication addiction.

Eminem is a brilliant performer who is loved for what he does. I will never forget when I first saw him on stage in 2003 at the Paris Bercy show and I’d like him to know that this unforgettable event is one of the most beautiful moments he offered me through his music and great performance. I will keep the magic of his show in my heart as long as I live.

I am asking myself if Eminem is feeling guilty of being absent so often or if he also puts a burden of guilt on his fans shoulders. Eminem ought to know that true fans will always be very understanding towards his situation and the way he feels.

It seems very clear that Eminem’s heart is bleeding right now. The fans need to understand that Marshall is tired, that he has some issues to solve and that he really needs to take a break.

Marshall has visions of nightmares into his mind while the curtain closes and he says goodbye to the crowd:

I hear applause, all this time I couldn’t see
How could it be, that the curtain is closing on me.
I turn around, find a gun on the ground
Put it to my brain and scream Die Shady and PUMP IT.
[.]My life flashes, the plane what I was supposed to be on crashes and burns to ashes.

He suddenly wakes up from his horrible nightmare when he’s back home:

That’s when I wake up, a long hot spring and there’s birds singing
It’s brilliant, Hailie’s outside swinging, I walk up to Kim and kiss her.
Tell her I miss her, Hailie just smiles and winks at her little sister.
Almost as if to say.

Marshall, you filled my eyes with tears with your brand new song. I feel that too many problems are unsolved and do hurt inside of your family. Take the time needed to heal your heart. we love to see you performing, but your loyal fans don’t want you to pay the highest price just to please our eyes and ears.

Eminem is telling us that he is not only physically exhausted, but also mentally. Let him close the curtain if he feels it is time to do so. a little girl has been deprived of her father for numerous years. Life is precious and Marshall needs to spend some time with his beloved ones.

Touching but very sad song that allowed us to penetrate into Marshall’s bleeding heart and gave us some insight about how he really feels right now.

Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8

I’ve blogged about the 70-200mm f2.8 lens range several times now on this blog and how this lens type is considered a staple for any serious photography enthusiast. The original party manufacturers manufacture these very complex lens to high specifications, and they routinely cost an arm and a leg too. The Nikon version of this lens for instance costs a painful SGD2,900 here!

As a hobbyist, there’s no way I’m ever going to spend that kind of money on a lens. OK, not unless it comes with maybe 50 cans of abalone. Until that day comes, the next best was Sigma’s version of the lens – the Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM – which has about identical specifications to the Nikon/Canon ones. There’re always risks with third party lenses and how they match to the original equipment manufacturer ones, but reviews everywhere have agreed that while this lens’ quality is just slightly lower than the Nikon one, especially in image center sharpness, it’s amazing value for money nonetheless.

I took the plunge for it last Monday. The lens normally costs about SGD1,950 here, but rather than paying that, I picked up an export set, losing local warranty but saving myself about SGD450 on the other hand. The lens arrived just after dinner, so I took the opportunity to take several pictures of Hannah and Ling when we all headed to the playground for Hannah’s Sunday play activity.

The lens is certainly hefty, but I imagine my old D300 would had been a better counterbalancing unit to it than the lighter D7000 that I use now. Focusing was pretty quick (reviews note that the Nikon lens is even faster though) and spot on. The lens focusing motor is a little noisy though, and you can feel the optical stabilizer mechanism working over time too with a slight jolt in the lens barrel each time.

Still; shooting with a f2.8 telephoto zoom is a great new experience. I really look forward using this new lens outdoors with our girl.=)

Ostasewski: Valentine nougats

Lee OstaszewskiValentine’s Day is approaching. Guys, you know what that means: Shopping for stuff we don’t truly understand. these include mysterious items that men generally have a hard time grasping, such as flowers, greeting cards, and jewelry. Guys are not well versed on the nuances of each of these. most guys, I bet, would be much more comfortable if the typical Valentine gift tended toward home entertainment equipment, or mulch.

Guys also happen to spend a lot of time on fantasy football leagues. if somehow a thoughtful, romantic Valentine’s Day present could consist of giving that someone special in your life her own fantasy football team roster, then fewer women would be as disappointed on Feb. 14 as generally are now.

About the closest confluence of Valentine’s gift giving and a man’s understanding falls within the realm of candy. Guys can relate to candy.

it might turn out that women actually have little interest in candy; perhaps they figure this is the best they can hope for from a guy so they act excited.

although, even with candy, what guys would pick for themselves does not always match what women appreciate. for instance, I personally would pick a giant, loaf-of-bread-sized Snickers bar as being the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. That is, if Snickers made such a great thing. what many women expect on Valentine’s Day, however, are those fancy boxes of assorted candies. the kind that comes with its own GPS devise under the

lid: that piece of paper that tells us what each candy is.

Here are a few problems I have with fancy boxes of candy:

1) the descriptions don’t always help to prepare one for what the particular candy might really be. to keep it safe, I tend to pick ones that mention some type of recognizable nut in the description. Another key word I look for is cluster. Clusters are almost always good. I avoid any candy where the description includes the words cherry or marzipan.

what the hell is marzipan anyway?

2) if I dislike the particular chocolate I picked, I am extremely disappointed. Since fancy boxes of candy are usually rationed out one pick at a time, I then must wait until the next candy box opening to get another crack at it. this creates a level of stress that should never exist with candy.

3) On the other hand, if I really like the piece of candy I picked, in many cases that is the only one of its kind in the box. this means that whatever I choose the next time will be a major disappointment in comparison.

You see why a mega-sized Snickers bar makes so much sense?

even when a guy’s Valentine gift is candy, we still feel the need to purchase a card and flowers to go with it. my concern with flowers is that different types and colors convey specific meanings that men are unaware of. I am not good at interpreting poetry, so don’t ask me to catch on to the various subtexts of, say, a yellow rose or a pink carnation. as a public service, florists should have a chart on the wall explaining all this for us. “Green carnation = Leprechaun.”

Greeting cards are another issue. my first inclination is to look through the ones labeled humorous. Research, however, has shown that 99 percent of cards listed as humorous are not funny at all. just because there’s a photo on the front of an old lady wearing an old-fashioned, one piece bathing suit and bathing cap doesn’t make it hilarious.

Meanwhile, sentimental cards have now grown to the size of children’s picture books.

Valentine’s Day takes a guy out of his comfort zone. And I didn’t even mention dinner reservations. the good news is chocolate helps improve one’s mood. so when Valentine’s Day stress starts getting to you, reach for a giant Snickers bar. Everything will seem better then.

Discount Ski Boots

Discount Ski boots are easy to avail, since skiing is a seasonal sport in nature. Top brands namely Tecnica, Nordica, Salomon, Lange, and Rossignol, all offer large discounts on their ski boots usually in the off season. Hence, it is important to shop during appropriate time to get discounts on branded ski boots.

It is a common belief that during Christmas week heavy discounts are available on skiing equipments. However, as this period marks the beginning of skiing season, the price during this period is at its peak.

A good place to buy discount ski boots is the local sports shop. these shops offer broad range of ski boots at discounts. Visit a specialized store dealing in ski accessories, as they render good bargains. Along with it, these shops hire expertise boot fitters, which can help to discover the best ski boots.

Points to Remember:

To buy discount ski boots is a daunting task. Discussed below are a few guidelines that buyers need to follow:

  • Firstly, locate a reputed ski boot shop having experienced and qualified staff on board. it is important to trust the boot fitters, since they know which boots fit well and give maximal comfort to a particular feet shape.
  • Do not just go by the price of discount ski boots and purchase the first one made available, at least try on three pairs before the purchase. it is the foot shape as well as the ability of the skier that ultimately determines the boots and not the favorite color and the pair matching the ski jacket.
  • Do not go by the appearance of the ski boots. While purchasing from a discount store on internet or from a shop, it is advised to pay heed to the features and make of the boots, instead of its appearance.
  • Examine the shell fit. This is perhaps the first thing that a buyer needs to do while buying discounted ski boots. Ascertain that ski boots are shell fit. Skier can take out the liner from the shell and then, simply slide the foot inwards. Keep the boot on the floor and slowly slide the foot frontward, till the toes contact the last part of boot. Keep the foot in the same position and gauge the space amid the foot and back portion of boot by placing the fingers. it need not be more than 2 fingers space. if the space is more, then that boots are bigger for that skier’s foot shape.

Can My Kid Still Get Treatment? Why Autism’s Definition Matters

This isn’t just an academic debate: by rewriting autism’s definition, the American Psychiatric Association will affect services for thousands.

AutismRibbon-Post.jpg

Everyone, now, has something to say about autism. while TV shows, such as Touch, portray autistic children as possessing superhuman powers, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) is busy revising its definition of the disorder to focus on only the most affected individuals. Under their new revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DMS), the tome that describes and codes psychiatric issues ranging from autism to substance abuse to schizophrenia, people with higher functioning autism, sometimes called PDD or Aspergers or simply high functioning autism, could lose the autistic label.

The new DSM V definition, which reads like a Dim Sum menu of dysfunction, states that an autistic person must have three deficits in social communication, show two out of four patterns of repetitive behavior, and begin to display deficits in childhood. Together, these deficits must impair everyday life. the previous definition in DSM IV had more options on its menu and would include kids whose issues were lumped in one area. the new definition also adds language that would only apply to the most severely affected individuals. It’s no longer just about showing an “apparently inflexible adherence to specific, nonfunctional routines or rituals.”

Outside the school, parents whisper. If our children no longer qualify, what will happen to them?

What’s in a name? Why is the autism community up in arms about this change in the DSM? What exactly is at stake?

When my son turned two, he could not talk. He made hand gestures to ask for things, but the words that swam around in his head could not come out of his mouth. To make sense of the world, he taught himself to read. At three, when he was upset, we would write him notes, instead of talking to him. He understood written words better than anything we said to him.

Ian was clearly different than other kids. In very important ways, he was disabled. In less important ways, he was gifted. What was wrong with him?

When my son stopped developing like other kids, I took him to see specialists. Because he didn’t look classically autistic, they gave him a dozen other labels for his condition — Sensory Integration Disorder, Apraxia, Speech Delay. He didn’t receive an autism diagnosis from a neurologist until he was five. the doctor sat us down in the examining room and asked, “has anyone every used the word autism with you?” We sat in stunned silence in that room for 20 minutes trying to wrap our minds around this word.

After we recovered from that blow, we slowly realized that the autism label was our savior. Ian now qualified for a school that specialized in high functioning autistic kids. there, he received targeted help from individuals with an expertise in autism. He received speech therapy four times a week, occupational therapy to help with his fine motor control, and ABA therapy to help him control his focus and limit his OCD tics. while our insurance company still tortured us about paying for certain therapies, laws were in place that gave us some protections. In the state of New Jersey, the Autism Insurance Act requires that private insurance cover diagnosis and many programs for the autistic. With his new schools and services, Ian made rapid progress.

During those three years when we wandered lost through the forest of disability labels, Ian missed out on years of services that would have better targeted his needs. I suppose that regret is an inevitable part of parenthood. For us, we’ll always regret that we didn’t find the right label for him until later.

According to the APA’s new definition, autistic children should have “excessive adherence” to routines and have “highly restricted” interests. those words, excessive and highly, are subjective and might exclude my son, as well as all of his classmates. Outside the school, as they wait to pick up their kids, the nervous parents whisper. If our children no longer qualify as autistic, what will happen to them? Will insurance companies pay for their speech and ABA therapy? Will the school district pull them out of their special classrooms? so many parents of autistic children have huge financial problems due to unreimbursed therapy and the loss of income. Will this new law make their financial burden worse?

Make no mistake: What may appear to be a purely academic debate over the autism label will have a real impact on thousands of families. For those of us whose lives are inextricable from the politics of autism, it is the label — the one that was so difficult for us to accept at first — that has been the key to getting help for our children.

Incorporating social media in your PR strategy will ensure your pitch is heard above the din. In order to effectively use social media in your PR pitch plan, we recommend a few points that can be added to your ‘to do’ list:
o Avoid the Fancy Stuff:

Too much information laced with fancy catch phrases like ‘cutting-edge, mission-critical applications to improve business process, etc’ can put off readers. Keep in simple.

o getting your Tweets Right:

If you are planning on using Twitter to make a pitch, keep in mind, you have 140 characters to get it right. according to Nicole VanScoten, a public relations specialist at Pyxl, getting your tweets right leads to high response rates than e-mail.

o Don’t Spam them:

Whether its journalists or bloggers, no one likes to receive random tweets or Facebook messages. it would be a good idea to learn about the journalist or blogger before reaching out to them. Read their Twitter profile or personal blog to find out if these are the contacts that need to be targeted and then make your pitch.

o Build a Relationship:

Once you have figured out your contacts list, the next step is easy. Building a relationship with a journalist or editor involves getting on their radar. What you can do is a) check out their Facebook page and comment on the posts you like b) retweet their messages and c) comment on a blog post. This will ensure your presence on their radar, even before you decide to make a pitch.

Here’s an example of a good pitch made by a PR professional to a marketing blogger:

For PR pros, using social media to make a pitch saves time as well as money, besides yielding much higher response rates.

2. Delivering Value to Clients
The last 2-3 years have seen PR agencies don an entirely new role in organizations. a large part of a PR specialist’s job involves educating clients on the benefits of social media. Handling a company’s or a client’s account these days includes everything from building brand loyalty to promoting and monitoring content on various social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn). In order to be a successful, we believe a PR firm should deliver value to its clients. here are a few simple suggestions:

PR companies are expected to be experts when it comes to writing. Therefore clients expect your agency to figure out how to turn a boring announcement into interesting content. This could either be a campaign or a company blog. Churning out good content will not only get the required media coverage, but will also help generate leads.

o Identifying the Influencers:

Identifying and developing relationships with the ‘influencers’ in the PR domain is an added advantage. Instead of simply looking for bloggers and journalists who are magically expected to create buzz and drive sales, it will be wiser to:

o Determine who the real influencers in a noisy market place are. This can be done by connecting with reporters, bloggers and journalists who cover the topics that are closer to the market your client is interested in.

o Keep in mind, the size of one’s audience does not always translate into influencer popularity.
o Engaging and Monitoring Conversations:

Social media monitoring and engagement is vital for any PR agency that wants to deliver value to its clients. Brands understand that they not only need a social presence, but are also keen to work with PR agencies to know what is being said about them in the market. By using social media monitoring tools such as Brand Monitor, you can:

o Measure your influencer scores: Social media monitoring tools make it easy to identify journalists and bloggers with high influencer scores.

o Handle Crisis Situations: By keeping a watch on blog conversations, twitter messages and Facebook posts, your agency can help identify signs of trouble. following this, you could either diffuse the situation yourself, or alert your client asking them to respond as necessary.

o Measure the consumer sentiment for clients’ brand (s) and products (s) and quantify impact.

o Measure the connection between press releases and news coverage with social media activity.

o Assess the effectiveness of your communication strategies.

o Provide you clients with domain expertise based on the data obtained.

o Measure detailed metrics such as popularity, share-of-voice etc.

When videos of rats running around at a Taco Bell outlet in NYC were posted on YouTube, owner Yum Brands saw its stock sink to an all time low, with customers doubting Taco Bell’s hygiene standards. within hours, duplicates and versions started multiplying. Customers looking for reassuring information from the brand had a hard time finding it. Although Yum Brands’ PR team was not entirely ignorant (the CEO posted an apology on YouTube), monitoring the situation better and engaging with customers in real-time could have averted the PR crisis.

With the public relations industry evolving rapidly, the need to monitor social media channels has never been more important. according to Daryl Willcox, founder of PR industry information firm Daryl Willcox Publishing, listening is a critical part of social media strategy – a proactive process as much as a reactive one. a survey by his company indicates that almost 60% of PR agencies and departments that monitor social media channels spend less than two hours a week doing so. these statistics indicate the growing need for PR companies to monitor social media.

3. Sorting out your Social Media Toolkit

With so many social media platforms to choose from, how would you know what’s best for you? As professionals in PR domain, it’s not always about putting a PR pitch on Twitter or Facebook; the social media platforms with the most value must be used to connect with a client’s target audience and should function as a meaningful place for brands to connect with journalists, bloggers and consumers. We believe that each social media tool has its own benefits, depending on what your agency wishes to achieve.

o Facebook & LinkedIn:

While Facebook and LinkedIn are almost perfect for establishing and maintaining relationships with media, these tools are slightly more personal than Twitter. it would be wise not to start sending friend requests to every reporter possible. after using Twitter to initiate a friendship with a journalist or a reporter, you can then follow this up by connecting with them on Facebook or LinkedIn.
If you are looking to increase engagement or reinforce your brand’s reputation for value, then Facebook is the place to be. for instance, when the Healthy choice brand aimed to grow its fan base and increase engagement, the company decided to target its huge Facebook fan base and launched a progressive coupon on the Healthy choice Facebook Page. This was supported through a variety of PR tactics. Efforts by the brand’s PR team resulted in the Healthy Choice’s Facebook page growing from 6,800 to nearly 60,000 fans. The PR team also distributed over 50,000 buy-one-get-one-free coupons.

Twitter is a great tool:

o if finding influencers in on your agenda: What you can do is look for influential blogs in your industry, subscribe to them and start following the authors on Twitter.

o for connecting with other independent PR professionals: This will help establish valuable relationships with other PR agencies and professionals. By using Twitter, you can connect with the rapidly growing independent PR community to exchange advice, references, and suggestions in general.

o for Increasing Tweetability: Writing a headline with ‘tweetability’ in mind can influence the number of tweets or retweets your press release registers. This will help get your agencies or client’s name noticed in the social web. while writing a tweetable press headline you must: a) keep it short enough to include a Twitter handle and link b) ensure that the company or product name is in the beginning so that it does not get cut off c) add relevant keywords to make it searchable d) and keep it attention-grabbing enough to generate retweets.
o Blogs:

Blogs can be useful for sharing multimedia content and news that does not always require a press release, but is important enough to pique the interest of the media. Blogs are beneficial:

o if you have a small budget, but want to influence your customers and increase readership.

o for creating a sense of community with your present and future potential clients and customers.

o for providing valuable content to your clients or their customers instead of simply advertising to them.

o for publishing successful case studies; this will also help build your brand.

o for designing campaigns for your clients.
When the BALSAMS Grand Resort Hotel in New Hampshire decided to use social media to stand out in the digital space, the hotel partnered with agency bobdonpaul. The agency’s PR strategy involved selecting one ‘resorter’ from several entries and allowing him to blog and post videos (in addition to other social media activities) about his experiences. The campaign was a success and saw 20% increase in hotel bookings in a month.

4. Measuring ROI
How can you tell if your public relations efforts in social media are working? to determine the success of your PR strategy or programs, we suggest measuring the return on investment (more appropriate in case of PR- return on efforts). The benefits of measuring ROI include:

o Knowing if your efforts are generating the desired results.
o Helping you decide if your current strategy needs to be reworked.
o Bringing about positive changes in popularity and online traffic.
o Helping your client make informed buying decisions.

How to calculate your social media ROI?

o Assess you reach: Evaluating how many Facebook fans or Twitter followers you have. How many ‘likes’ has your Facebook page registered.

o Tracking how many ‘likes’ on your clients’ Facebook page are actually converted to sales.

o Comparing Results before and after Launching Social media initiatives: has your newly launched Facebook page or your new twitter account make any difference to your brand’s reputation online?

o Listen, Measure and Engage: Social media monitoring tools like Brand Monitor offer you a platform to listen, measure and engage with customers across the social web.

What gives the modern PR firm the edge over its yesterday’s counterparts is the fact that today’s public relations professionals are more open to syncing social media with their existing strategies. Whether it’s in-house assignments or working for external clients, PR agencies understand that surviving in the digital space is centered on getting their social media strategy right. while mass social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn will continue to be important to a certain extent, niche, industry-specific networks are expected to be of greater value in the future.

In the next five years, the most important tools in PR will be monitoring and measurement tools. PR specialists, as well as their clients, will be more concerned with what happens after a message is out there. We expect PR companies to not only dedicate a budget for their social media efforts in the future, but also hire social media specialists to handle their client’s social media activities. The social media world is dynamic; however, the job of the PR person remains the same: generate positive coverage across media to help build brands. it will be interesting to see how PR pros in the years ahead will leverage the power of social media to do what they always have been doing; communicating and connecting.

New iPad textbooks offer opportunities, challenges to local schools

If Apple’s latest vision for the future is fulfilled, turning the page of a textbook could become as easy as swiping a finger across a touch screen.

The computer and software giant announced last week it had joined forces with major textbook industry publishers to begin offering the sale of digital textbooks for the iPad through their online app store. In the first three days following their announcement, Apple reported sales of more than 350,000 digital textbook downloads, all priced at $14.99 or less.

With the multi-touch interface offered by the iPad, the textbooks are designed to facilitate an immersive learning experience. Students can rotate 3-D diagrams, zoom in and out on objects, highlight texts, take notes and search databases for definitions and information.

Having technology offered by the iPad is still a dream for many classrooms, but a handful of schools in Hamilton County have already taken steps to make what they think will be an imminent transition. Beginning in the fall of next year, Baylor School will require all students to purchase iPads for use in the classroom.

Barbara Kennedy, director of external affairs for Baylor, said teachers had already begun to experiment with the advantages and opportunities offered by a paperless communication platform in anticipation of next year’s change.

“We knew when we launched this initiative that it would take awhile for the textbook industry to catch up, but we knew they would,” Kennedy said. “When we heard the announcement from Apple, it was great news to us. In the not-too-distant future, students won’t be walking around with textbooks anymore. They’ll have iPads.”

But the point at which iPads or tablet devices become ubiquitous in classrooms is still a long way off. With a starting price tag of $499, the cost of getting an iPad into the hands of most students is still high.

At Rivermont Elementary in Hixson, students have enjoyed the opportunity offered by a refurbished library this year, complete with state-of-the-art digital media equipment and 30 iPads. but the new library would not have been possible without a $100,000 grant from the Lenore Annenberg Foundation, and several of the school’s students still have no access to the Internet within their own homes.

Sam Martin, the media specialist at Rivermont Elementary, said he thinks that the proliferation of digital media technology into classrooms is a good thing, but he is concerned about the potential for creating unforeseen inequalities between students who have access to cutting-edge resources and those who don’t.

“As a Title I school, you see a lot of the effects of poverty and conditional funding,” Martin said. “It excites me, but I see a large potential for disparity. At Baylor, every student has an iPad, but here, we’re lucky if every classroom has a working computer, much less a wireless infrastructure. You’re still going to have the haves and the have-nots.”

Martin added that as new generations of teachers enter the classroom, schools will become more accommodating to committing resources to new forms of educational technology.

Officials within the Hamilton County Department of Education are working in that direction, having aggressively sought funding for bringing a STEM school (which stands for science, technology, engineering and math) to Chattanooga. Last month, school board members voted to move forward in pursuing nearly $2 million in state funding to open a 300-student, open-enrollment school on the campus of Chattanooga State Community College.

The department is still awaiting news on whether it will be awarded the grant. should the grant be given, the school system will have seven months to put all the pieces together before an August opening of the school.
