WASHINGTON, Feb. 21, 2012 — /PRNewswire/ – with the nation’s largest health information technology (IT) conference, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2012, serving as the backdrop today in Las Vegas, a new study by the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions indicates physicians are not using IT broadly to engage patients.

No more than 20 percent of doctors are providing online scheduling or test results for their patients and just 6 percent are using social media to communicate with patients, according to Deloitte’s “Physician Perspectives on Health Information Technology” report.

Moreover, measured against the IT goals and deadlines prescribed by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, only 25 percent of physicians are “on target” to meet the meaningful use incentives, according to the report.  Doctors, however, are more confident about being able to satisfy the mandate to upgrade their medical billing and coding systems (known as ICD-10 implementation) with just 21 percent reporting they cannot meet the October 2013 deadline.  Overshadowing this optimism, however, is the fact that 62 percent of physicians cited managing ICD-10 documentation as a “major concern.”

Dr. Harry Greenspun, senior advisor for the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions and lead author of the report, says other areas of the survey demonstrate that physicians accept the value of health IT.  Two-thirds of doctors say they use some form of electronic records to manage clinical information and a similar number believe IT can improve care long term.

“The voice of physicians today seems to have two components: one that accepts the value of information technology to improve quality and safety of care and another that expresses concern over its cost and potential to disrupt how they practice,” said Greenspun.  “This dissonance is one reason why IT is not further entrenched in our health care system.”

Greenspun, however, believes physicians will more readily adopt IT over the next two years as pressures mount to demonstrate value around evidence-based care, improved outcomes and reduced complications.

“Greater accountability will compel providers to a greater reliance on data, requiring that it be collected electronically, shared appropriately and analyzed methodically,” he said.  ”The key is to bring IT to the medical community in a way that enhances care while minimizing the costs and disruptions involved in implementation.”

Potential Implications with Health IT

Greenspun also offers the following insights from the report:

• IT Cost Equals Opportunity for Assisting Doctors. the cost of IT related to investment and impact on productivity is the primary barrier to adoption, with 66 percent citing upfront financial investment as their primary concern and 54 percent saying this about operational disruptions.  This creates an opportunity for organizations that can assist physicians with financing, implementation, workforce training and process redesign.
• A Widening Technological Divide.  Differences in the use of electronic health records among single versus group practices could widen health gaps among communities as some rural and urban areas are served by single practitioners and less likely to employ health IT.  Nearly one-half (46 percent) of single practices do not use EHRs compared to 22 percent of group practices with 10 to 49 full-time employees.  Furthermore, 45 percent of solo practices have no plans to use EHRs, compared to only 15 percent of practices with 10 to 49 full-time employees.
• Losing Touch with Broader Issues.  Although large-group practices are more aggressively adopting IT, group-member doctors seem less informed about what is driving the effort.  more than one-third (39 percent) of physicians in practices with 10 or more full-time employees are not familiar with the Health and Human Services standards for ICD-10, compared to only 25 percent in solo practices.  Large-group doctors may be more disconnected around macro issues because they have a layer of management absent in smaller settings. This raises the question:  will management be able to drive change without physicians understanding the rationale? 
• Winning Over Patients with Online Tools.  Providers seem to lag other industries in using IT to engage consumers despite growing demand. Deloitte’s 2011 Survey of Health Care Consumers in the United States shows growing consumer interest for secure messaging, access to personal health records and remote monitoring.  Moreover, consumers trust information from physicians more than from employers or insurance companies, according to the survey, creating an edge for physician groups to gain market share via online engagement.

It was my thirteenth birthday, Nov. 6, when I got my first drum set. I was in the eighth grade and my parents had asked me if I wanted one as a gift. of course, I said yes. I didn’t grow up in a supremely wealthy home, so such an offer was hard to come by. one of my good friends at the time was a drummer and I had probably mentioned offhand that I thought it would be cool to learn. To date, I still have that same drum set and I’ve played at least 30 shows with. Granted, it’s been through its fair share of alterations, but the same shells are still there.

I started playing music when I was the fourth grade. I played the trumpet even though I had wanted so badly for Ms. Kennedy, my elementary school band teacher, to pick me to play drums as my first instrument. Alas, it was not to be. I went on to play the French horn in middle school before quitting band in favor of cross country and track in high school.

That being said, I consider myself self-taught when it comes to drumming; the only lessons I ever had were from my mom’s old coworker, Joey, an obsessed KISS fan. he knows how to play every KISS song (and probably most glam rock songs) ever created and even has Gene Simmons’ signature tattooed on his bicep to boot. he refused to let my mom pay him directly for the lessons (all three or four of them) and instead requested that he be paid in six packs of Red Bull.

I’m not entirely sure if there’s a certain way that most self-taught musicians end up progressing throughout their years by teaching themselves to play by ear. I taught myself how to play almost entirely by listening to other drummers in my favorite bands (at the time, anyway) and copying what they did. thing was, I could never do exactly what they played in their songs so I ended up making up my own parts in order to fill in the gaps.

The first song I ever taught myself to play along with to was “Faint” by Linkin Park (you know the intro to that song was the coolest thing your middle school ears had ever heard). I would play with my crappy earphones on, cranked full-blast. I could still only halfway make out the song over the sound of my drums. the second song I ever taught myself was “Car Underwater” by Armor for Sleep. anyone remember them?

Unfortunately, my family had to move into an apartment complex for a few years in high school, and I couldn’t play drums at all. at that point, I had been playing for three years but only matched up to someone who had been playing for maybe one year. In short, I was pretty terrible.

It was my senior year of high school (making me 16 at the time) when I finally decided that I wanted to get involved with some other musicians and get a band together. anyone that grew up the Antelope Valley (Lancaster/Palmdale area) knows that the heart of the music scene out there is hardcore music, and my little group of friends and I were no different.

Problem was, I had never played in a band before. Hell, I had never even used a double bass pedal before. so, I bought one on sale on Guitar Center one day and tried it out.

When I first started playing with a double pedal, I couldn’t hold a sequence of hits on that thing for any longer than three in a row (for those of you who have no idea what that means, just know that it’s pretty awful).

Luckily, with a great deal of practice and dedication, I finally got to where I am now. Granted, that’s not very far at all in the grand scheme of things; 30 shows and a self-distributed five-song EP with my old band we Are Paramount is a meager number compared to most serious artists, but I can say that I’ve played shows with artists like Sleeping with Sirens, Jonny Craig, Eyes Set to Kill and Arsonists get All the Girls, among others. I’ve played shows in Hollywood and Pasadena, and now at UC Irvine I’ve begun another chapter in my life with music.

Granted, I haven’t been able to find many people with the same musical interests as myself, but I’ve been having the greatest time playing with people of all different musical backgrounds and learning more about myself as a musician and pushing myself more than I ever have.

For now, I conclude with one of the most important lessons I’ve learned since I’ve been writing and playing music. It’s not about how hard your song is to play, or how many random time changes and sweeps you can stuff into four minutes. It’s about the passion that you can put into playing your songs and singing your lyrics (if you’re a singer, anyway). Granted, ornate songs do have their place in music and I do enjoy them, but the real gold lies in the raw emotions.

Until then, fill your listeners and your audiences with that passion you pour into your songs. Write music; don’t just cover songs you like on the radio (although that can be fun too). Play what you feel, and feel what you play.

This column is going to be dedicated to that journey as a musician, my thoughts on music and insight of what it means to write music and put yourself and your work out into the world of scrutiny. I hope you enjoy.

Two timely nutrient data sets provided by U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists are being used by the beef and pork industries to provide new Nutrition Facts labels for their products. Federal rules require specific meat and poultry products to carry new nutrition information.

Although some retailers have already begun implementing the new rules, the original starting date of Jan. 1 has been extended to March 1, giving retailers more time for implementation. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that the new rules will make important nutrition information readily available to consumers for 40 of the most popular cuts of meat and poultry.

The data sets are provided by the Agricultural Research Service Nutrient Data Laboratory, which is headed by nutritionist Joanne Holden in Beltsville, Md. The data sets for retail cuts of beef and pork provide retailers with easier access to the most accurate beef and pork nutrient data for the purpose of both on-pack and butcher-counter-posted nutrition labeling. ARS is USDA’s principal intramural scientific research agency.

Previously, NDL researchers, in collaboration with representatives of the beef and pork industries and various universities, conducted several studies designed to update and expand the available nutrient data on current beef and pork cuts and products. The results led to a major update of beef and pork nutrient data in the USDA-ARS National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference Release 24, which is managed by NDL. Called SR for short, the database is the major authoritative source of information about U.S. food composition.

The two downloadable data sets–”The USDA Nutrient Data Set for Retail Beef Cuts, Release 2.0″ and “The USDA Nutrient Data Set for Fresh Pork from SR, Release 2.0″–are presented as both a PDF file and as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Users download the data sets, free of charge, onto a computer hard drive and use the data in conjunction with other software programs.

TEWKSBURY, Mass., Feb. 20 (UPI) — a surveillance and fire-control radar system attached to tethered aerostats has been successfully tested in the United States.

Raytheon said a series of demonstration tests were conducted on its Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor system in Utah. The system tracked targets, integrated the information with fire control and tactical data link systems of air and missile defense systems.

“The monthlong DT-1 demonstrated JLENS’ maturity to track low-flying cruise missile surrogates, unmanned aerial vehicles, fighter aircraft and moving surface targets, and to integrate with air and missile defense systems,” said David Gulla, vice president of Global Integrated Sensors at Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems business.

Raytheon said one of the two aerostats that carry the system aloft elevates a surveillance radar to 10,000 feet. Radar coverage area is 360 degrees for hundreds of miles. The other carries the fire-control radar and both can be integrated with various communications and sensor systems.

“In addition to detecting and tracking targets, the system demonstrated its ability to communicate targeting data over command and control systems, such as Link-16, and interface with combat identification support systems, such as IFF (Identify Friend or Foe), to discriminate between friendly and hostile aircraft and missiles,” said mark Rose, program director for JLENS with Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems.

Live-fire tests using JLENS will be conducted later this year.

The visa also expressly forbids the Thai applicant access to any ‘social benefits’ such as social security, health care or pension rights. be aware that many/most Thai applicants are refused their first attempt, because their submission is ‘half-hearted’. If the stated reason is, say, to visit a friend or lover, the you really need to prove an on-going, long-term relationship of at least six months with your partner.
